U.S. Congressman. He attended the Military Institute, Vanderbilt University, graduated from the law department of the University of Alabama, in 1908, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Selma, Alabama. He served as judge of the fourth judicial circuit of Alabama, (1921-26), chairman of the Muscle Shoals Commission, in 1931 and chairman of the Alabama National Recovery Administration Committee, in 1933. In 1935, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-fourth Congress and to the next seven succeeding Congresses, serving until 1951. Not seeking reelection, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
