Son of the late William Jordan and Sarah Spruill Hassell, he was the widower of Elna Margaret Craddock Hassell. Additionally, he was preceded in death by sisters, Gertie M. Marriner, Louise H. Tarkington, Ruth H. Tarkington, Marion Janette Hassell and Dora Hassell; brothers, Nathan Hassell, David Hassell, Earl Hassell, Thomas Jordan Hassell, Elbert Hassell, Robert Hassell and Lester Hassell. He was a retired service manager with House Chevrolet. He was a member of Roper Pentecostal Holiness Church. He served as chief of the Roper Fire Department for 17 years before his retirement. He was a member of Albermarle/Newland Hunting Club. He was survived by his daughter, Betty H. Dowd (Jerry); sons, James E. Hassell (Kathryn) and Charles R. Hassell (Katie); sisters, Juanita H. Oliver and Patricia H. Hudson; grandchildren, great-grandchildren; and an extended family of relatives. His funeral was held at Roper Pentecostal Holiness Church on June 11, 2011, with The Rev. Bobby Williams officiating.
