Mary Ann Joslin was born in Mays Landing, Atlantic County NJ. She was the daughter of the Reverend Hosea Joslin, a Methodist minister, and Margaret (Carman) Joslin. She was the ninth of eleven children.
She married sea captain Elias C. Ackley in 1855. They had seven children, three of whom lived to adulthood; Roxanna J. Ackley (Wagner, Friendlich), Mary Ellen Ackley (McKeen), and Asenath Palmer Ackley (Lacy).
Mary Ann made, bottled and sold Elias Ackley's Indian Vegetable Cough Syrup in Mays Landing, New Jersey, during her husband's life and until her own death in 1880. The recipe still exists in the family, and seems to have had genuinely medicinal ingredients which are still used in both natural and traditional over-the-counter remedies today.
