Private, Company A, 18th Pennsylvania Cavalry. Discharged by General Order No. 83 on July 11, 1865 at Cumberland, Maryland.

John Finnegan was born in Ireland in 1837 and came to America when he was 18 years old. He settled in Greene County, Pennsylvania. Listed in the 1880 Aleppo Township Greene County, Pennsylvania census with wife Eliza and 9 children. The couple eventually had 12 children, 6 boys and 6 girls. Filed for a pension on August 6, 1879, application number 302,163, certificate number 524,879. Address listed as Cameron, West Virginia, in the 1890 Veteran's Census.

Date of death also listed as June 27, 1917.

Moundsville Weekly Echo, July 6, 1917 JOHN FINNEGAN John Finnegan, aged 82, a veteran of the civil war passed away at his home at Cameron Thursday afternoon. Mr. Finnegan was widely known all over the county. He was born in Ireland in 1836 and came to America at the age of 18. He is survived by twelve children: Mrs. Wm. Murtaugh, Decatur, Ind.: Mrs. Marshall Hatsell, Sycamore, Pa.; Mrs. James Mackey, Woodruff, W. Va.; Mrs. C. E. Corcoran, Elm Grove; Mrs. Nannie Murphy, at home; O. J. Finnegan, John Finnegan, Jr., and James Finnegan, all of McMechen; D. R. Finnegan and J. T. Finnegan of Elm Grove. Submitted by Joseph D. Parriott; typed by Linda Fluharty. NOTE: Served in Company "A" 18th Pennsylvania Cavalry.
