John was readmitted to the Soldier's Home in Ohio on 3 Oct 1912, transferred to the home in Virginia on 2 May 1914, and died at the Soldier's Home in Hampton, Virginia on 13 May 1914. Cause of death related to the heart.

Pension records show his place of death as Centerville but Soldier Home records indicate he died while a resident of the Soldier Home in Hampton, Virginia. Alternate place of death would be Centerville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania.
John's body was released to his grandson, John S Putnam Jr of Portsmouth, Virginia, and he is buried at the Hampton National Cemetery. He died at the age of 85 years.
