After attending commercial college in St Louis he became a clerk in a store in Venice IL and following that became associated with his father in the hardware and implement business in Highland for 15 years.
Appointed Postmaster in Highland on 4 May 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt and served 1906-1914 (retiring in May 1914, being replaced by Freak A. Winter) after which he became Cashier of the Farmers & Merchants Bank until his health failed him. He was a invalid the last several years of his life.
