Luella E. Schultze


DECATUR -- Luella E. Schultze of Normal, formerly of Ransom, passed away suddenly Tuesday (Oct. 28, 2003) in BroMenn Regional Medical Center, Normal.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday in First United Methodist Church, Normal, with the Rev. Dale Beck officiating. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. Monday in the church. Burial will be 2 p.m. Monday in Allen Township Cemetery, Ransom. Hagi Funeral Home, Streator, is in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers will be Mark Schultze, Louis Herrin, David Bock, Larry Gage, Linn Reed and John Christie. Memorials: Luella E. Schultze Scholarship Fund College of Education Campus, Illinois State University, Box 5300, Normal, IL 61761 or the Baby Fold, Normal.

Ms. Schultze was a graduate of Streator High School Class of 1937 and Illinois State University. She received her master's degree at Colorado State University.

"To teach is to touch a life forever." Luella touched many lives over her 44 years of teaching. She taught for two years in Hudson and in Decatur for more than 16 years, during which the time she opened one of the first primary rooms in the state of Illinois for the educable mentally disabled. She taught for 26 years at Thomas Metcalf School in Normal and became an assistant professor and faculty member of the department of curriculum and instruction at Illinois State University. She retired in June 1984.

Ms. Schultze was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a past president of Beta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, a member of University Women's Organization, Idler's Book Club and Stitch and Chatter Club. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Normal.

Surviving are her aunt, Ruth Rinker of Ottawa; sister, Irma Christophersen and family of Ohio; niece, Lori (Louis) Herrin and family of Normal; nephews, Mark (Barbara) Schultze and family of Madison, Wis.; Curt Schultze and family; cousins, Ruth (Larry) Gage and family of Marseilles; Linn Reed and family of Grand Ridge; Joy (John) Christie and family of Ottawa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Helen and Lester Schultze; and brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Vera Schultze of Bloomington.
