The Correctionville News, 31 July 1952, page 1: Funeral services for Garrett R. Lake, aged 98 years, 7 months and 8 days, who passed away July 22, 1952, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C.C. Lyman, were held Thursday afternoon, July 24 at 2 at the Methodist Church in Cushing where Mr. Lake was a long-time member. His pastor, Rev. Arthur Dyson officiated. Garret Reuben lake, son of Thomas D. and Sarah A. Lake, was born in Inlet, Illinois, on December 14, 1853. While a small boy he moved with his parents to Baxter Springs Kansas, and after a few years they returned to Illinois where he grew to manhood. On February 10, 1876, he married Mary Ann Dewey and to them eight children were born, three children preceding him in death. Mr. Lake was active for many years as a stockman and was widely known for his honest dealing. They spent the greater part of their married life in or near Cushing. For several years they resided in Morningside in Sioux City where Mrs. Lake passed away. Since her death, Garret has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Kittie Lyman at Correctionville. He was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church. He served as trustee of the Cushing Methodist Church and was a member of the board of stewards. Five children survive him, Mrs. Fannie Millen of Cloquett, Minnesota, Mrs. Nell Gilman of South Sioux City, Nebraska, Mrs. Mildred Brown of Ames, Iowa, J.D. Lake of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Mrs. Kittie Lyman of Correctionville.
