US Navy Seaman. Hugh McCormick enlisted in the US Navy in 1803, in New York. He was most likely a deserter from the Royal Navy. In August 1804 he fought in actions against the pirates of Tripoli. He volunteered to join the crew of the "Intrepid" whose mission was to destroy the pirate floatilla in Tripoli harbor. On September 4, 1804, while carrying out this mission, the "Intrepid" exploded killing McCormick and 12 other men aboard.
