He was born in Abington, Va., but spent his early childhood in Lexington, MO. He then moved to Texas for a number of years and was involved in local politics there. After moving to Baton Rouge, he was the original builder of the first street car line. He was a former East Baton Rouge parish clerk of court, assessor and commissioner of parks and streets.
Although too young to participate in the War of Northern Aggression, his interest in the veterans got him appointed as an honorary member of United Confederate Veterans Camp No. 17 in Baton Rouge. He had 5 brothers that served in the Confederate Army.
He organized and became captain of the first military company in Baton Rouge after the overthrow of carpetbag rule, the Ogden Light Guards.
He was in the levee and railroad construction business.
He lived at 316 Royal Street.
