West Texas Farmer, Sheriff. Served for a time as a mail delivery man. Moved to Gaines County in 1926 was Sheriff of Gaines county during prohibition era. Died with tuberculosis in 1945 at the age of 60. Newt and Lillie were blessed with four children, Jim, Betty, JG, and Lannie. Buried with his wife, Lillie Banks McCleskey in Loop Cemetary, Loop, Texas.

Picture at the lower right is of Sheriff Newt McCleskey, taken on the Gaines County Courthouse steps. The man on the right is deputy sheriff, J. O. Priddy. The apparatus between them is a captured whiskey still. My mother told me once that Newt McCleskey took one of the captured stills and made a bathtub out of it for the McCleskey household. Mum said they were the only people in town with a solid copper bathtub.
