Doris Bowman Beverly (1923 - 2011)

Doris Bowman Beverly of Fort Worth, affectionately known as "Sister," passed away Saturday, July 9, 2011, after a brief battle with cancer. Funeral: 3 p.m. Friday in Laurel Land Memorial Chapel in Fort Worth. Interment: 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 18, in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio. Visitation: 2 to 3 p.m. Friday in Laurel Land Memorial Chapel.

Doris was born in San Antonio on June 16, 1923. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 59 years, Frank Beverly; mother, Margaret Smith Bowman; father, Leslie L. Bowman; and brother and wife, Leslie Jr. and Edith Bowman of San Antonio. Doris and her husband, Frank, moved to Fort Worth in 1958 after traveling with the military to Europe and Hawaii, where Frank was stationed in the U.S. Air Force. She became a cosmetologist after Frank retired and owned two beauty salons. But her passion was the game of golf. She was the first woman to play in the Colonial National Invitational Tournament in 1974, and had no less than three holes-in-one in her golfing career. She was also a beauty pageant winner. In 2001, at the age of 78, she placed third in the Mrs. Texas Senior pageant and was awarded Ms. Congeniality. Her talent was clogging, which she took up at the turn of the century in her mid-70s. The family wishes to thank Agape Home Health Care and Devine Mercy Hospice for all of their loving care for Doris at the end of her life.

Survivors: Sisters-in-law, Imogene Beverly, Doris Ritland and Marilyn Beverly; 19 nieces and nephews; numerous friends, including her closest friend, Jewel Woods; her neighbor of 45 years, Rita Cook; her cousin, Grace Woods; her Sunday school teacher, Helen Yeatts; and her pastor and friends at Travis Baptist Church. Her constant companion was her dog, Penny, who will dearly miss her.
