Daniel Rapelje was the founder of St. Thomas and he donated the land the church and cemetery reside on. His son George is the oldest grave in the cemetery (1819) and he is supposedly buried close to George and another son. Capt. Rapelje served in the War of 1812 (Lundy's Lane and other battles). He became a Captain in the 1st Middlesex Militia. In 1814 he built a log grist mill and divided a portion of his land into town lots. The settlement that Rapelje established formed the nucleus of the city of St. Thomas.
