James at age 20, was sent to America as a British Soldier under command of General Burgoyne in May 1775. He was a small man of 5'2" in height & rather young looking for his age. He was chosen for a mission as a spy for the British army. In a short time he defected to the Continental Army & at time he served as aide-de-camp to General George Washington. He was an expert in the use of sewing & knitting needles & made George Washington's socks.
In his pension papers say that he enlisted from Epping, NH. in Poor's Reg't, Capt. Morris's Co. on June 15, 1775.
2nd service enlisting @ Portsmouth, NH.8/27/1776 in Prince Long's Reg't, Capt. Rowell's 2nd NH.Reg't, Capt. Mark Wiggin's Co. & discharged 9/8/1777. He joined 3rd time under Col. Nathan Gillman with one yr. service. The 4th time he joined from Poplin, NH. 8/3/1779 was under Capt. Rowell's 2nd NH. Reg't, 3rd Co. & the last enlistment was from Poplin, NH. in the same Reg't 2/1781.
James Gordon was placed on pension roll 7/24/1820 & commenced to draw a pension from his military service dates back to May 1818. He received $ 96.00 a year & drew a total of $ 1,471.15 throughout the remainder of his life. He was 82 years old when he started to receive his pension.
He married Jerusha Tarbell ( daughter of Thomas & Esther Smith - Tarbell) in 1777 @ Mason, NH.She was the older sister to Edward Tarbell. They lived in Mason after the war. About 1788 they moved to Cavendish, VT. They moved to Rushford ( what we now call, little Cavendish )just after their son William Gordon moved there.
