During the American revolution, Walton served under Captain John Loving. After moving to Wilkes county, NC, Walton served under Captain John Brown's Riflemen and served under Col. Benjamin Cleveland in the Battle of Kings Mountain. After the war, Walton & his wife moved to Charleston where she died in 1787.
He moved with his son William Walton Jr. to Burke County, NC, zome time after the death of his wife. Three of Walton's sons married daughters of Irish innkeeper James McEntire.
He died in 1806 and was buried in the original Presbyterian churchyard. His remains were moved to the present cemetery location in the early 1960's.
