DIED -THAYER - In River Falls, March 18,1889 of pneumonia, Josiah Thayer, aged 77 years 7 months and 6 days.
- The deceased was a son of deacon Josiah Thayer and was born at Douglas, Worcester county, Mass. where he resided until he was 17 years of age, when the family removed to Thompson, Conn. Here his father died, and the son remained on the farm making a home for his mother and sister until the farm was sold. The two years following were spent in the village of Thompson, Conn. He was married Sept. 4, 1818 to Miss Watie Stone and immediately started for the west, settling upon a farm in Seneca county, Ohio, where they lived until 1863 when he removed with his family to River Falls, Wisconsin.
There were born to Mr. and Mrs. Thayer five daughters and two sons, all of whom, together with their mother are now living.
The deceased was a kind husband and father, quiet and unassuming in his ways and won the esteem of all who know him by his industry and uprightness.
The funeral services were from the residence on Tuesday afternoon, Revs. Watson and Whitelaw officiating.
"Gone! and the world to go on as before;
Gone,with a smile, from the old homestead door,
Dear, faithful hear, to come back nevermore,
O, sad nevermore.
Home is not home! father's not there!
Dark is his room! empty his chair!
Angels have taken him out from our care-
Lifted him over life's stair.
Sleep father. sleep with your hands on your breast.
Poor, weary, hands! they needed their rest.
Well have we loved you, but God loved you best,
Dear heart! He's given you rest."
