U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the Kentucky bar in 1828, began the practice of law in Franklin, Kentucky and moved to Missouri, in 1830. He was a member of the Missouri, State House of Representatives, (1840-44), presidential elector on the Whig ticket, (1844, 48, 52) and a member of the Missouri State constitutional convention in 1845. In 1857, he was elected as a candidate of the American Party to the Thirty-fifth Congress and as an Independent Democrat to the Thirty-sixth Congress, serving until 1861. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 76.
