U.S. Congressman. Self-educated, he moved to Monticello, Missouri, in 1840 and engaged in agricultural pursuits. He was Lewis County Circuit Clerk, (1848-54), studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law. He was a delegate to the Republican Missouri State convention in 1870 and elected as a Liberal Republican to the Forty-second Congress, serving (1871-73). Not a candidate for reelection, he practiced law and attended to his farm until his death at age 79.
