GREEN COUNTY KENTUCKY OBITUARY – 1979
Garnett A. Milby, age 81, retired Green County businessman, farmer, and civic man, died Tuesday, September 4, 1979, at Metzmeier Nursing Home in Campbellsville, KY after a long illness. He was born in the Green County community of Gabe, May 20, 1898, the son of J.N. & Melinda Noe Milby. He received his education in the rural public schools of Green County and then attended Western Kentucky State Normal School and Russell Creek Academy. His first occupation was that of a public school teacher, a career that was interrupted by his service in the US Army during WW I. He volunteered for service in April 1917 and was discharged November 30, 1918, following the war. He taught at Terrell School on Brush Creek, Dix Creek School, and Perkins School (Spunky Ridge) before he moved on to become a business man. He operated grocery stores in Summersville and Hudgins briefly and then in 1924 went into business with W.J. Henderson in Summersville, operating a garage for the next 20 years. The family moved to Buckner Hill in Greensburg in 1944, making its home in the brick residence now known for its hillside of March lilies. After moving to Greensburg he operated Milbys Implement Company for several years. Never a man to be involved in only one activity, Milby served 4 years on the Green County Fiscal Court, several years as a chairman and member of the Green County Development Committee and 22 years as vice president and board member of the Taylor County RECC. He was engaged in farming for 40 years of his adult life and worked with the burley tobacco market for over 50 years. He was a member of the William B. Allen Masonic Lodge, Summersville and Rod Lowe Post 124 of the American Legion. He had been a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian faith since age 12 when he joined the Oak Forest Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Gab. He moved his membership to the Greensburg Cumberland Presbyterian Church in 1945 and served as an elder for 20 years. Milby was united in marriage to Ethel Henderson, January 18, 1922. She preceded him in death, August 5, 1973. He is survived by 2 children, a son, Walter Randall Milby, and a daughter, Mrs. Evelyn Simmons, both of Greensburg; and by 5 granddaughters, Dianne Simmons of Louisville, and Jan, Melinda, Terry & Cindy Milby, all of Greensburg. Friends may call at the Foster-Jones Funeral Home after 3 p.m. Wednesday, September 5. Masonic rites are scheduled for 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the funeral to be conducted at the Greensburg Cumberland Presbyterian Church at 1 p.m. Thursday, by the Rev. Melvin Orr, pastor, assisted by the Rev. D.L. Druien, Campbellsville. Military rites will follow at Wilson Cemetery.
