US Congressman, Civil War Confederate Militia General, CSA Congressman. He served during the Civil War as a Major General of Mississippi State Militia, and commanded a division of state troops who served in Kentucky in the Winter of 1861. He had previously been elected to represent Mississippi's 2nd District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1857 to 1861. After resigning from the Militia, he was elected to represent Mississippi in the Confederate Congress, serving from 1862 to 1863. An outspoken critic of President Jefferson Davis, he missed more roll calls and votes then he participated in. He was a candidate for Governor of Mississippi in 1863, but lost. He resgined his Congressional seat in 1864, and sat out the rest of the war.
