The son of Sam Clay, born in Kentucky, and his wife Charity (Blackburn), born in Virginia.

Husband of "Elve Everline". Her name is given as Eliva on other records, and their son Charles' death certificate states her maiden name was Snoddy.

Squire and Eliva were officially registered as married in 1879, but as Eliva's name was given as "Clay" and they had six children on the 1880 census, it's not clear if they had been married earlier and these were also Eliva's children, or if Squire had a previous wife:
