Sgt. Christopher P. Soderlund, 23, of Pineville, La., died July 9 in Logar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with rocket-propelled grenade fire. He was an infantryman assigned to 2nd Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Polk, La. Chris served two tours of combat. He served in Iraq from December 2007 to January 2009, and deployed to Afghanistan in October. He joined the Army in March 2006. During his Army career Soderlund had been highly decorated, including awards such as the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and the Army Commendation Medal.
Chris was an ambitious and energetic soul, who enjoyed spending time with his friends and family. He also was a talented artist and his interest differed from skateboarding and working out, to tattoos and drawing. His character was humorous and uplifting, and he could be found fishing with his daughter, having a cookout with his parents, and being a role model for his sister, just as easily as heading a major mission down range. He was incredibly excited to father a son in 2010, and his wife and he were nearing their 5th year anniversary. Chris will be missed by all who knew him, in a most unimaginable way.
He is survived by his wife, Jessica C. Soderlund; son, Gabriel Soderlund of Fort Polk; daughter, Adrianne Soderlund of Fort Polk; mother and stepfather, Donna and Donald K. Paul; sister Cassidy Paul of Pineville and father, Paul Soderlund. Pallbearers were members of the United States Army. Honorary pallbearer was Derek Williams.
