An incident connected with the marriage of Lucy Waite, the widow of Reuben
Bardwell, with Asahel Wright of Deerfield: The mother of Asahel had for some
time been urging him to get married. Reuben Bardwell was a well-to-do
Deerfield man when he brought his young bride home, and the next Sunday the
were at church, as were Asahel and his mother. He whispered to his mother,
saying to her that when he could find such a girl as Lucy, why, he wouldn't
hesitate to get married. Reuben died in three months. After a suitable time
his mother called his attention to the matter and he, nothing loth, sought an
interview with the young widow, offered her his heart and hand and was
accepted. They lived in Deerfield. They lived together 64 years. They had
9 children.
She was married to Reuben BARDWELL (son of Dea. Thomas BARDWELL and Sarah
BELDING) in 1749. Reuben BARDWELL was born on 2 Nov 1723 in Deerfield,
Franklin, Massachusetts.
She was married to Asahel WRIGHT (son of Judah WRIGHT and Mary (Mercy) HOYT)
on 2 Feb 1750 in , Franklin, Massachusetts. Asahel WRIGHT was born on 8 Oct
1721 in Wapping, Franklin, Massachusetts. He died on 4 Dec 1816 in Wapping,
Franklin, Massachusetts. History of Deerfield, Volume II, by George
Sheldon, Published by E. A. Hall & Co., Greenfield, MA, 1896. p. 393
Settled in Wapping; selectman 5 years; ordained deacon Dec. 26, 1760; he
was a plain man with plain habits; it is told, as characteristic of the man,
that he left directions to have no brass nails on his coffin, and that flax
strings should be used in place on the usual iron handles. Brass headed
nails were commonly used on the coffin lid to mark the initials and age of
the occupant; he went to an extreme far less offensive to good taste than the
funeral display often dictated by vanity or fashion in our day.
His mother had been urging him to marry; when Reuben Bardwell came into
meeting with his bride, Asahel whispered to his mother, "I'll get married
when I can find another like her;" when Lucy was left a widow 3 months later,
his mother did not fail to remind him of his remark and urge him to action.
