Annie Claude Bennett, 89, passed away Sunday, July 10, 2011 at Bert Fish Medical Center, surrounded by family and friends. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 13 at Settle-Wilder's New Smyrna Beach Chapel, where visitation will be 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Mrs. Bennett was born in 1922 in Hoboken, Georgia to parents Claude Powell and Serene Lee Ammons. In 1942 she went to Fernandina Beach, Florida where she met her future husband, Louis Bennett. They were married in 1945 and moved to their home in New Smyrna Beach in 1948. A devoted wife and mother, while her husband, a commercial shrimper, was at sea she was busy taking care of her three children, Peggy, Patsy and Louis Jr., and working in the community. When her husband returned to shore with his catch, no matter where, she piled the children in the car and headed to meet him, whether it was in New Smyrna, Fernandina, Fort Myers, or some other port. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church Ruth Class, former president of the Read-Pattillo Elementary School PTA and Brownie and Girl Scout troop leader. Her hobbies were cooking, sewing, and gardening.

Mrs. Bennett is survived by her daughters, Patsy (Wayne) Weeks and Peggy (E. J.) Walker; grandchildren, Michael (J.J.) Weeks, Valerie (Mike) Hall, Cameron (Mike) Teems, Philip (Beth) Walker, Daniel (and companion Jen Webb) Walker, Drew Walker; and great grandchildren, Staton Weeks, Jamison Weeks and Alexander Louis Teems. Mrs. Bennett was pre-deceased by her husband Louis, son Louis Jr., and sister Lee.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Bert Fish Medical Center Foundation, P.O. Box 1000, New Smyrna Beach, FL 32170.
