Died from wounds 31 Dec 1918 at Base Hospital No. 7 from bronchial pneumonia and shrapnel poisoning sustained about October 22nd during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. He wrote to his mother on Nov 1, 1918 from a bed in the hospital and stated "My wound is about two inches wide and three inches long. I was hit with shrapnel but I was sure lucky at that. It is a wonder I didn't get all blown to pieces for the shell hit right at my feet, ..."
Originally buried in French soil, remains returned to the US and re-interred in the Topeka Cemetery
