BURNS ARE FATAL TO LITTLE CHILD

Burns received yesterday morning
when the home was destroyed by fire,
proved fatal to little Miss Alpha
Cartwright, granddaughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Albert Garner, at Hixton, near
Duncansville, in the Altoona hospital
last evening at 8.20 o'clock.
While Mrs. Garner was taking the
child to a window in order to get her
out of the burning home, the child
broke away and returned to her bed
room for clothing and inhaled smoke
and flame and was severely burned
before she was rescued.
She was born at Osceola Mills,
March 26, 1922, the daughter of William
R., and Mrs. Florence Garner
Cartwright. The mother died
Memorial day, May 30, 1926. Since
that time, the father and two children
made their home with Mr. and Mrs.
Garner. She is survived by her father
and one brother, William Roy, jr., and
her grandparents.
The body was taken today to the
home of Levi Harren, a neighbor,
where funeral services will be conducted
Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock.
The body will then be taken to Martinsburg
for interment in the Fairview
cemetery.
The grandmother, Mrs. Catharine
Garner, aged 43, who was burned about
the face and neck, is considerably
improved at the Altoona hospital and will
be able to go to her home with a few
days. Roy Cartwright, aged 3, who
suffered only from a face laceration, is
also ready to go to his home.
