"Funeral service for Darius M. ‘Shorty' Mounger was held Friday, Jan 21, at Egypt's Christ Lutheran Church , with Pastor Mark Egertson officiating. Mr. Mounger, a resident of the Lincoln Nursing Home for the past five years, passed away Jan 18, 2000 at Lincoln Hospital. He was 89. Darius was born on Jan 1, 1911. While living north of Davenport, he attended grade school at South Egypt and Hart country schools. He went to Davenport High School for four years, graduating in 1929. After graduating from high school, Darius went to Longview, WA, to work in the timber industry and fish cannery. He entered the Army in April 1942. He was a sergeant in the 610th Army Air Force at Williams Field, Chandler, AZ, where he was an airplane mechanic. He was honorably discharged on Jan 25, 1946, at Maxwell Field in Alabama. While living in Florida, he worked in a service station and motorcycle shop. He moved to Kettle Falls,WA, in 1958. Mr. Mounger owned an electric shop and worked as an electrician in Kettle Falls. Later, he worked for Bonners Lumber Co. He retired in 1980 and came to Davenport to live with Bud and Edith Reinbold for five years. He borrowed five acres of land from Bud and planted an orchard, and a vegetable and fruit garden. He was a successful gardener and gave many of his friends fruits and vegetables that he had grown. He planted a peach and apricot orchard at Miles. Mr. Mounger became ill in Nov 1994, and entered the hospital and nursing home, where he stayed until he died. Mr. Mounger is preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gary Mounger; and two sisters, Fern Oehlwein and Violet Pimentel. Survivors include three sisters, Beulah and her husband Herman Reinbold, and Edith and her husband Bud Reinbold, all of Davenport; and Fay and her husband Ted Hagen of Marysville, WA; one brother, Edwin and his wife, Marilyn Mounger of Hawley, MN; and many nieces and nephews. Strate Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements." ( Davenport Times: 1-27-2000)
