Akin was born on a farm in the Post Oak community, Stephens County, Texas.
He graduated from the Little Rock School of Pharmacy in 1923. Akin spent his early business career operating drug stores in oil boom towns such as El Dorado and Smackover, Arkansas. Akin opened Akin Pharmacy in Houston Heights in 1943 and operated the independent pharmacy until 1974.
Akin served as president of the Harris County Pharmaceutical Association from 1951-1953. He was a member of the Matthews Methodist Church.
