Thomas Thornton III was the son of Thomas Thornton II and Lucinda Waters. He was born in Virginia but moved to Kentucky at a young age with his family. He married first wife Nancy Kitchens about 1800, and they were the parents of at least 3 children, including Margaret "Peggy" Kitchens Thornton. Following the death of first wife Nancy, Thomas married second wife Mary "Polly" Coppage, about 1821; with whom he had son Thomas Harrison Thornton and possibly 2 or more other children.
