Felix W Arnold was a Private in Company F, 7th Regiment, Illinois Cavalry serving in the Union Army from 16 Aug 1861 until he was mustered out on 15 Oct 1864. D

During the latter years of the Civil War, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war, being kept for nearly two months at Port Hudson, Louisiana. He eventually made his escape by swimming nearly two miles across a muddy stretch of the Mississippi river while rebel troops tried their best to shoot him.

Upon returning to his regiment, General Ulysses S. Grant, hearing that a man had escaped from the fort, sent for him and together they sat down on a log and the General asked Felix a great many questions about the situation of the forces in the port as he intended to storm the port in a few hours. Felix advised the General not to do so, for they would have to surrender in five or six days, and that it would be a use-less loss of life.

Grants forces did not storm Port Hudson and on July 9th, 1863 it finally surrendered.
