Graduated from Manchester High School 1862, and during his years at Dartmouth College taught school in the winter months at Bedford, New Boston, NH and Glouster, Ma. He was one of the editors of Aegis during the summer of 1864 (Dartmouth College)

July 1866 he entered the law officer of Samuel N. Bell in Manchester, 1870-1871 he was City Solicitor of Manchester, and treasurer of Hillsborough, NH. He was a trustee of Manchester City Library and treasurer and managing trustee from 1879-1906. Member of Manchester School Committee 1873-1874, 1877-1878, and 1883-1890, member of the NH legistature 1876, and Justice of Manchester, NH police court 7/1876-5/1895. On the Board of Trustees of the State Industrial School with two years as President, also a member of NH FIre Insurance Co as clerk, attorney, director as well as vice president and treasurer. 1879 has him as Director and Attorney for Merchants National Bank and its President in 1895, plus numerous other distinguished positions. He was admitted to Odd Fellowship in 1866 Noble Grand of the Order 1873, Chief Patriach of Encampment, and a Mason in 1867. He was High Priest 1883-84 and Grand High Priest and elected as a life member in 1875, as well as Scottish right degree in 1885 and honoary thirty third degree in 1872, he married Elizabeth S. Bisbee on November 22, 1870 and had three children.
