Mark Anthony Servatius: July 3rd, 1952 - July 2nd, 2011

Retired fire chief, author, musician, fisherman, father Mark Servatius passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of July 2nd, 2011 at his home near Portland, Oregon. His passing was following a courageous 19-year struggle with Multiple Sclerosis.

Mark graduated from Weiser High School in 1970. He went on to play music in several bands that performed country western music throughout the Treasure Valley area in eastern Oregon and western Idaho.

Mark had a long career in the fire service. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s he worked in the Weiser and Ontario fire departments. In 1987 he became fire chief of the Weiser fire department. Then later, fire chief of Central Point, OR. He retired as deputy fire marshal of the Jackson of Country fire department in 1997.

Mark had incredibly varied interests. He was a hobbyist pilot, motorcycle and snowmobile racer, a scout leader, and he was an avid steelhead and salmon fisherman on the Rogue River. As his disease progressed, he enjoyed building model airplanes with his son, Jason.

He was diagnosed with MS in 1992. Within weeks of his retirement in 1997, he was placed in adult foster care, then was later divorced. Despite these life challenges, Mark maintained a dignity, grace and irrepressible energy that served as an inspiration to his family and all who knew him.

In 2004, Mark began to write a book titled A Short Walk to the Beginning of the Rest of My Life. With the use of a single finger on his one useful hand, he pecked out the story of his life. After it was republished in 2010, he began writing a novel in which his children embody fictionalized characters at the scene of a fire.

Mark is survived by his sons, Craig Regester, Ryan Servatius, and Jason Servatius; his siblings, Leanne Ambrose, Greg Servatius and Karyn Larsen; two grandsons; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his beloved caregivers, Estera Bodale of Portland and Sherry Post of Medford.

Mark is preceded in death by his father, Philip Robert "Bob" Servatius, his mother, Carole Servatius, his grandparents, Julius and Elizabeth Servatius, and Rose and Gene Shields.

His funeral will be held at 1 pm Saturday, July 9th, 2011 at Christ the King Church in Milwaukie, Oregon.
