Rev. James Raymar Pope 9th child of Dr. Samuel Pope and Freelove Waterman Pope of Union, Broome Co., NY., and Freelove Pope of Janesville, Rock Co., WI.
At the age of 5 years his father Samuel Pope, was a prominent physician, moved to Broome Co., NY. At the age of fifteen James' father died, leaving a family of nine children, of which he was the seventh son. In 1839 Mr. Pope came to Wisconsin probably with mother and brother Cyrus Waterman Pope, settling in Rock County, near Janesville where other brother Virgil Pope resided Section 14, Janesville. At the age of twenty-two he began the study of law, but was converted a year later and joined the Free Will Baptist Church. He abandon the bar and took the pulpit, and began preparation for the same at once. In June 1848 Bro. Pope was ordained to the gospel ministry and in 12 June 1851 in Harmony, Rock Co., WI., was united in marriage to Justina V. Miller a daughter of Cornelius Miller and wife Selinda Smith Miller.
They had three children:

Samuel Cornelius Pope m. Emma Ann Black

His work for the most part was in Soutern Wisconsin. He organized five churches and baptized 250 people.
His wife Justina V. Pope a great helpmate in his preaching to people.

In 1889 he was pastor of Longbranch Free Will Baptist Church, located 6 miles southeast of Tecumseh, Johnson Co., Nebraska.
There is a Petition and Will for James R. Pope Estate File 6086 died 8 June, 1897 in the Village of Clinton, WI.
