Chess Master. Born in Moscow, Russian, he was the World Chess Champion from 1927 to 1935, and from 1936 to 1946. He defeated Cuban chess master José Raúl Capablanca in 1927 to win the world championship and defended it successfully (apart from a defeat by Dutch chess master Max Euwe in 1935) for nearly 20 years.
