Businessman. Paley was born in 1901 in Chicago, Illinois, to a prominent cigar manufacturer from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1928 he purchased a struggling radio network for $400,000, and later turned into the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) media empire. He made it into a $3 billion-a-year conglomerate encompassing television, films, records and publishing. It also helped to introduce such diverse programs as Edward R.
