Businessman. Paley was born in 1901 in Chicago, Illinois, to a prominent cigar manufacturer from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1928 he purchased a struggling radio network for $400,000, and later turned into the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) media empire. He made it into a $3 billion-a-year conglomerate encompassing television, films, records and publishing. It also helped to introduce such diverse programs as Edward R. Murrow documentatries and Lucille Ball's "I Love Lucy" into millions of homes. He was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 1988.
