George was born September 1868 in Beetown, Grant County, Wisconsin, the eighth of eleven children born to George Peter and Amie Proctor (Ward) Ritter. On 4 March, 1890 he married Sarrah Vancer in Cedar County, Missouri. Of this union there were 4 children born. George was a farmer in Kansas City, Wyandotte County, Kansas at the time of the 1900 Census. He had 4 children but only 2 were still living.

Around July 18, 1918 George was admitted to the State Hospital in St Joseph, Buchanan County, Missouri. He died there 28 days later at 11:30 am on August 21, 1918 of paralysis and insanity. According to his death certificate he was buried on August 23, 1918 in Kansas City, Missouri.
