James R. Casey Sr., 88, of Heyburn, passed away Friday, July 8, 2011, at the Cassia Regional Medical Center in Burley.

James was born Aug. 17, 1922, in Blackfoot, Idaho, to Edward Riley Casey and Beatrice Ann Casey. He was the second of 11 children. He lived in Blackfoot then moved to Kamima and then later to the Boise area, where he and his older brother, Verl, joined the CCC. Then he moved to Montana, settling in Dillon, then later in Anaconda, where he went to work for the Anaconda Copper Company. At the start of World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in the 5th Army under Gen. Mark Clark in the 804th Tank Destroyer Battalion, 1st Recon Company in North Africa and the Italian Campaign in the battles of Al Alamaine, Anzio Beach, Gustoff and Adolph Hitler Line, Battle of Monte Casino and Pole Valley and then on to Rome.

After returning from the war, he met the love of his life, Lorraine Marie Morse. They were later married on Feb. 12, 1946. They had four children, James, Linda, Rosalie and Dale. The family was later sealed together for time and all eternity at the Idaho Falls Temple. Dad had a strong testimony of the gospel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which he lovingly shared with his family. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and camping with his family in the hills of Montana and Idaho. Jim and Lorraine later moved to Heyburn. They shared 63 years of marriage until Lorraine passed away on Oct. 25, 2009.

James is survived by his brother, Merle Casey of Washington; his sister, Edna Cunningham of Heyburn; son, James Jr. (Lorie) Casey; his daughter, Linda (Fred) Smith; his daughter, Rosalie "Rosie" (Greg) Miller; and son, Dale Casey. He had 20 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren ; and five great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine; his parents; five brothers; three sisters; and his beloved granddaughter, Launa.

We'll never say goodbye, dad, just so long for now. Old soldiers never die. They just fade away.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 15, at the Heyburn LDS 2nd Ward Church, 530 Villa Drive. VServices will conclude with burial at the Shoshone Cemetery with a graveside service at 3 p.m., with military honor rites under the direction of the Hansen Mortuary Rupert Chapel.
