Ruanna Nelson, a native of Illinois, married James Brackan Hornback, also a native of Illinois, about 1853. After their marriage they lived in Keokuk County, Iowa. In the 1860 Census they were living in Warren County, Iowa, and by 1870 they had returned to Keokuk County.
James and Ruanna had 7 children: John Hampton, Dora Alice, William Henry, Charles, Della, Jesse, and Jennie.
James was a veteran of the Civil War. He served with Co G 10th Iowa Infantry from 1861-1862. Two years after his discharge, he re-enlisted in Feb 1864 in Co K 33rd Iowa Infantry and received a disability discharge Jan 1865.
James died at Keokuk County, Iowa in 1882 at the age of 50 years 9 months 17 days. Ruanna died many years later in 1916 at the age of 82 years. They are buried together at Pennington Cemetery.
