She was the daughter of Samuel M. Wolfe and Maria Antoinette Garland Wolfe.
On August 28, 1848 she married Captain James Henry Carleton, United States Army. They were the parents of five children, two of who died in childhood. Her remains were removed from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on February 17, 1886.

Sophia Garland Wolfe, widow of the late General James Henry Carleton, of the United States Army, died on the 16th ultimo, at Santa Barbara, California. Mrs. Carleton was the granddaughter of Colonel Benjamin Wolfe, who commanded at Richmond during the revolution and great-grandniece of General James Wolfe, who fell at Quebec. Her paternal grandmother was descended in direct line from Sir Arthur Wolfe. Her mother was Marie Antoinette Garland, sister of General Garland, of the United States Army and daughter of Judge Hudson Garland, of Virginia, whose eldest son, James, had been on the bench at Lynchburg for sixty years and is the oldest Judge in the United States.
