Panamanian President. Boyd received his doctorate of medicine from Columbia University in New York in 1899. He continued his studies at institutions in France, Germany, England, Ireland, and Austria, mastering five languages in the process. He had specialties in urology and spinal anasthesiology. Returning to Panama in 1905, he held various positions in government, including President of the Panama City Council, Deputy of the Panama Province, and President of the National Assembly. He was elected first vice president under Juan Demostenes Arosemena in 1936, functioning as Minister Plenopotentiary to the United States. Upon the death Arosemena, Second Vice President Ezequiel Fernandez acted as president until Boyd's arrival in Panama. Boyd served as president from December 18, 1939 until October 1, 1940. During his tenure, he saw the opening of the Transisthmian Highway (also called the Boyd-Roosevelt Highway), the St. Thomas Hospital Maternity ward, the Juan Demostenes Arosemena Radiological Institute, and the National Institute of Agriculture (later the Dr. Augusto Samuel Boyd National Institute of Agriculture). He was the son of founding father and fourth Panamanian president Federico Boyd.
