Death and Funeral of Archie J. Stearns

Rockglen and district were saddened to hear of the death of Archibald Jerome Stearns, at his home on Thursday, April 20th, at 1:15 a.m. Mr. Stearns was born in Jefferson, Minnesota, in 1891. With his parents, he moved from Wisconsin to North Dakota in 1905 and seven years later, he was married to Miss Alma Louise Moen.

In the spring of 1917 he and his wife and two children moved to Saskatchewan and has lived on his farm at Borderland from that time until his death. He would have been 48 years old on May 18th.

There are seven children in the family, five at home (Elinor, Rachel, Gordon, Russell, and Lorna) and two married, a daughter Thelma, (Mrs. Kenneth Bondy) at Fort Peck, Montana, and Clinton Kimbal (Kink)Stearns who resides in the Borderland district. Frank Arthur Stearns of Quantock,Saskatchewan, is a brother and a brother Charles Gerlid Stearns is in the States. A sister, Mrs. Flatla, (Mila Relief Stearns Bond Forsythe Flatla), lives in St. Helens, Oregon. Archie had a brother Thomas Earl Stearns who died in North Dakota during the Spanish flu epidemic in 1918.

The funeral service was held in the hall at Rockglen on Friday, April 21st, and was conducted by Rev. R.E.H. Howell. Beautiful floral tributes and a very large attendance of friends from all parts of the district, testifies to the loss that the district feels at his passing. Interment was made in the Rockglen Cemetery. Pall bearers were Art Simpson, C.W.(Sammy)Linthicum, Neil Ryan, Aug. Jensen, Ernest Riley, G.F. McCabe.

Obituary states his name as Archibald; family notes refer only to him as Archie. Had two half-brothers according to family records: Norris Clayton Stearns (died 1956) and Charles Stearns (died 1870s. There were other children also born to his parents who died in infancy or died before birth.
