Panamanian President. Chanis received his medical degree (specializing in urology) from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1917. His medical career saw him as a professor at both the University of Panama Faculty of Medicine and the St. Thomas Hospital School of Nursing. He was Superintendent of St. Thomas Hospital and founder of the Panamanian Academy of Medicine. His political career began with serving as Consul General to England and then Minister of Finance and Treasury. A member of the Liberal Party, he was elected first vice president under Domingo Diaz Arosemena in 1948. He assumed the presidency upon Diaz Arosemena's resignation due to health problems on July 28, 1949. (He would die in August of that year.) Chanis' very short tenure was spent targeting government corruption. His presidency came to an end on November 20, 1949, when Commander of Panamanian police Jose Antonio Remon Cantera demanded his resignation to be investigated for alleged illegal activities. He would later claim that his resignation was submitted under duress.
