Sudie Frances Slayton was born December 14, 1869, the youngest daughter of James Thomas Slayton of Virginia and Sarah Frances Mays also of Virginia. At the time Sudie is born the family lives in Friendship Crockett, Tennessee. Her older brothers work the farm with their father. By the time of the 1880 Census Sudie is 10 years old and only 2 of her brothers remain at home continuing to work the family farm. Sudie works with her mother who she calls Salhi (Sallie) and learns to be a farm wife.
On July 12, 1891, Sudie marries Joseph Herman Lawrence and they start married life on a farm in Wingo Graves, Kentucky. By the time of the 1900 Census they have 2 daughters, Eddis and Ona and 2 sons Jack and Slayton.
In the 1910 Census the family has settled in Civil District 5, Carroll, TN and continues to farm. The boys Jack, Slayton, Dewey (Durward) and Dile are at home and work with their father on the farm. Oldest daughter Eddis is 17 and working as a Star Route Mail Carrier, Ona and Trumma work in the home.
Between 1920 and 1930 all of the Lawrence children have left home to begin their own lives with the exception of Trumma. In the 1930 Census, Joseph, Sudie and Trumma live in Poynor, Ripley, MO. Joseph is still farming, but at age 60 is close to the end of his farming days. In 1941 Joseph and Sudie move to Pueblo, Colorado, to be near their son Dile. They will spend the remainder of their lives in Pueblo. Sudie F. Slayton Lawrence dies February 5, 1952, she was preceded in death by her husband Joseph in 1950, sons Jack in 1950, George in 1938, Dile in 1949 and twins Bemry and Emery a son and daughter that died at birth in 1907. Surviving Sudie is her son Durward and daughters, Eddis (Elbert) Garner, Ona Mae (Curza) Judd and Trumma (Claxton) Clayburn. She is also survived by, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Sudie is buried in Sec B, lot 120, grave 3 next to Joseph; the grave is unmarked but confirmed by Imperial Memorial Gardens Cemetery records.
Her son Durward wrote on the back of the last picture taken of her, "Our mother, a better Christian never lived. She is with Jesus. Let's meet her there.
