This is an Unmarked Grave for an Oregon Pioneer of 1847.

The youngest of John and Rebecca Burkhart's daughters, Rebecca Ann Burkhart, was born on Jan 5, 1841 in Burlington, Des Moines Co., Iowa. She was only six years old when the family took the Oregon Trail in May, 1847, and emigrated to the settlement of Albany in the Oregon Territory. She met Charles Franklin Gay from Tennessee and they were married on May 27th, 1858 in Albany, Linn Co., Oregon. The couple moved 1st to Portland but then to Springfield, Lane Co., Oregon where Charles was working at the saw mill when the census was taken in 1870. By that time they had four children: Charles C., age 11, Florence G., age 9, Horace Walter, age 7, and Daisy A., age 2, all born in Oregon. 1880 found Rebecca living in Hillsboro, Washington County, Oregon, with Florence, now 18, Rebecca A. (Daisy), now 12 and in school, Gardell Franklin, age 7, and Demoines E., age 4. Charles is not listed on the census although Rebecca lists herself as still being married. I've not been able to find a census for him for 1880. The family moved to Washington and was living there when the US Census was taken in 1900, living in the city of Spokane. The couple now had six children, but, by 1900, they had all grown and established their own households as Charles and Rebecca were living at their home, alone, when the census was taken on that date. Their children were: Charles C., Florence G, Horace Walter, Rebecca Anna, Gardell Franklin, and Demoines E. Gay. [I have only found where three of their children are buried.] Charles died on June 18th of 1908 and was buried at Greenwood Memorial Terrace in Spokane. Rebecca continued to live in Spokane, as a widow, stating in 1910 that she was retired. She passed on June 11th, 1919, and was also buried at Greenwood Memorial Terrace in Spokane, Washington. Her grave is unmarked, per Rob Goff who did an extensive search at Greenwood Memorial Terrace in 2011. He did find where her grave was located and did confirm that it was unmarked. Unfortunately, it would cost quite a bit in today's dollars (he stated @$900.00) to place a headstone on her grave now. I appreciate his assistance, going to such great lengths to locate her & did thank him. [He was very helpful]. I usually don't break up families, however Rebecca's husband's descendant contacted me within a month or so of creating both his and Rebecca's memorials, requesting his and I transferred Charles F. Gay to her but made an exception this time and kept Rebecca as she is such a close relative of mine.
[Rebecca is the sister of Leander Columbus Burkhart, my great, great grandfather.]

Gravesite Details Leander Columbus Burkhart is my great, great grandfather. Rebecca Ann (Burkhart) Gay is his sister.
