Daniel Grundvig, 86, first Salt Lake City police officer assigned to motorcycle patrol, died of causes incident to age Saturday in a Salt Lake hospital.
Mr. Grundvig was retired from the policy department in 1933, with the department's highest officer rating, Inspector.
Born in Santaquin, Utah County, Jan. 10, 1873, to Frands and Ingrid Truelson Grundvig, he married Olivia Cox Feb, 3, 1901, in Salt Lake City. She died in January, 1943.
A veteran of the Spanish American war, he joined the Salt Lake City police department in 1906. For a short time he was patrol wagon driver, then served two years as bicycle patrolman, before he became the city's first motorcycle officer. He was appointed desk sergeant in 1913 and served in that capacity until his promotion to captain seven years later. He was promoted to inspector of police in 1929 and retired in 1933.
Survivors include three sons and a daughter; Lance C. and Clinton D. Grundvig, with whom he resided; Mrs. Bruce P. (Elaine Reiser) McBride, Salt Lake City, and Lt. Col. Hugh B. Grundvig, California; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and of United Spanish-American War Veterans.

Daniel first married May (Mary) Bylund on 26 May 1898 in Salt Lake, UT. Mary died 27 Jan 1901 and from the appearance of 'Baby Grundvig' on her headstone, she may have died in childbirth.
