As a young navy pilot he flew combat missions in WWII over North Africa, and the Pacific. He was shot down once and had to ditch in Kagoshima Bay, Japan. He was later picked up by a PBY.
He was awarded two combat Distinguished Flying Crosses.
Later in his career Capt. Hershey was XO of VF-61 in '49, CO of VF-81 in '55. He was made Commander CVW-8 aboard the USS Forrestal in '57, and CO of USS Kearsarge (CVA-33) in '65.
The F9F Panther on display at NAS Oceana, Virginia has Capt Hershey's name on it as he was the first CO of VF-81 at Oceana.
