During the late 1950's, Sybil Leek, a self-confessed white witch, lived in this village. She was a high priestess witch and started one of the first covens in the Forest named the 'Horsa' coven, which is still practiced today. 'Nonsense' I can hear someone saying, 'Nobody believes in witches today, we are far too civilised, superstition like that belongs to the middle ages'. However, the old religion, as it is known, should not be confused with Black Magic.

White witches are people who live close to nature guided by the sun, moon and stars, mixing herbal potions, practicing healing and astrology and spreading nothing but goodwill. Sybil Leek was one of these people. She was often seen walking through the village wearing a long black cloak with her pet jackdaw (Mr.Hotfoot Jackson) resting on her shoulder.

Not only was Sybil a witch, she also wrote many books on this subject and was a television reporter specialising in Forest ways. As she spent many years living with gypsies, her knowledge of the Forest was excellent. Unfortunately due to the popularity of these programs, her home was besieged by people who wanted to see and talk to a real witch. She, therefore, decided to leave her beloved New Forest and settle in America where she died in 1982.
Sybil Leek was a witch, astrologer, occult author and psychic.

She wrote several books on occult and the like and became known as Britains most famous witch.

Sybil insisted her ancestor was Molly Leigh, who had been accused during the witch hunts.

She wed at age 16 and her husband died 2 years later.

Leek emigrated to the United States of America one reason being she disliked much of the negative public interest in her.

She died of cancer
