Author. He received recognition in the 19th century as a writer who successfully wrote about the French landscape for mainly tourists. After starting law school, he left to pursue a career in writing and journalism. He specialized in travel literature, writing geographical and historical guides. He was the founder of "L'illuustration" in 1843. Believing a journey should be planned to save time and to receive the full benefit of the surroundings, he developed "the Joanne Guides," which became after 1919 the "Blue Guides." At first he wrote about France, but expanded by 1841 to Germany, England, Switzerland and the Orient. He often enhanced the description of a resort as a means to marketing it. His descriptions often found their way into other publications such as 19th-century textbooks, dictionaries, or atlases. He began to list what budget could afford a stay in which resorts. His son continued the family's business into the 20th century, printing a total of over two thousand books.
