Donald F. Ditzler, Civic Leader, Dies

Lima Man Collapses In Atlanta Station

Donald F. Ditzler, 35, Lima salesman and one of the city's young civic leaders, died unexpectedly at 11 a.m. Thursday in a railroad station at Atlanta, Ga., while en route to Macon on a business trip.

He resided at 2007 W. High-st.

Mr. Ditzler was a sales representative for Harry Wright Jr. and Associates, 314 S. Rosedale-av and had been active in affairs of various clubs and organizations to which he belonged.

He left Lima Wednesday evening with his employer for the South. When their train stopped in Atlanta, Mr. Ditzler left it to make a telephone call while Wright remained aboard. He collapsed and died instantly of a heart attack after entering the station, according to word from Wright to the family here.

Altho Mr. Ditzler had not been in the best of health, his death came unexpectedly. His family said he had not had any heart attacks previously.

Word of his death was telephoned to Mr. Ditzler's father-in-law, R. Ray Nelson, by Wright. The latter was to return to Lima late Friday by plane.

Mr. Ditzler, a reserve Army officer, had been given a medical release from the 408th Military Government Co. last June after being on active duty with the unit for about nine months. He was a veteran of World War II, having served from May, 1945 to July, 1946, including eight months in Germany.

A former member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Ditzler had been active in its affairs and civic projects. In 1950 he was co-chairman of the Soap Box Derby.

At the time of his death he was a member of the Association of Commerce, Optimist club, Lima Dinner club and Lt. John A. Leppla chapter, Reserve Officers-assn. He was vice president of the ROA in 1950 when called to active duty.

Mr. Ditzler held the reserve rank of first lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers.

He was born Apr. 19, 1916, near Westminster, the son of Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Ditzler, both of whom survive. His parents live on Route 1, Harrod.

He was married in June, 1940 to Helen M. Nelson, who survives, together with two children, Toyette, 9, and Donald, 2 1/2; and two sisters, Mrs. Emerson Stout, Route 1, Harrod, and Mrs. Gilbert Reichert, West Milton.

The body will arrive in Lima from Atlanta early Saturday and will be removed to the residence during the afternoon.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Monday in the Chiles and Son funeral home. Dr. J. Ira Jones, pastor of Trinity Methodist church, of which Mr. Ditzler was a member, will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery.
