Lewis' father died enroute home after release from Andersonville Prison. His mother later remarried Alexander McNett. They were living in Saginaw Michigan in 1870 but returned to Almond NY by 1880. He Married Daisy Husted on 24 Jan 1896 in Greendale, Midland, Michigan and they had one child, Albert Bert Whitney. Daisy filed for divorce in 17 November 1899 due to extreme cruelty and was finalized on 7 July 1900. Thomas E Cunningham and wife Lillian A Douglas took the child in and raised him. Albert assumed the last name of Cunningham. Lewis was a farmer most of his life and lastly a night watchman at the mill.
